Fall has a way of changing the rhythm of everyday life in Upstate South Carolina. Hot summer afternoons give way to cooler mornings, leaves begin changing across the foothills and the Blue Ridge Mountains, and weekends fill with football games, festivals, pumpkin patches, and trips to nearby apple country.
When you’re staying at Greenville Gateway RV Living for a few weeks, a few months, or longer, you don’t have to fit everything into one busy weekend. October gives you an entire month to enjoy fall at your own pace. Head to Clemson for a football game on a Saturday, pick apples one Sunday, or keep things simple with an evening outside and dinner on the grill.
If you’re ready to make the most of fall in Greenville, SC, start checking off this Upstate South Carolina fall bucket list.
Spend an Afternoon at Stewart Farms Pumpkin Patch
Apples aren’t the only thing worth picking this time of year. October is peak pumpkin season, and Stewart Farms in Enoree, SC gives you the chance to head into the field to pick your own pumpkin straight from the vine.
Spend the afternoon wandering through the SC MAiZE corn maze, take a wooded wagon ride, visit the farm animals, and stop by the farm store before choosing a pumpkin to bring back to Greenville Gateway.
If you’re looking for something a little more festive later in October, Stewart Farms also offers its family-friendly Big Boo haunted maze on select October evenings, along with nighttime wagon rides.
Once you’re back at Greenville Gateway, carve your pumpkin for Halloween or simply set it outside your RV with a few mums to add some fall color to your site.
Greenville Gateway Local Tip: Don’t wait until the end of October to make the trip. Going earlier in the month gives you more time to enjoy your pumpkin back at the RV throughout the fall season.
Spend a Saturday at a Local Fall Festival
Some fall activities require a drive. This one is happening right in Fountain Inn.
The 43rd Annual Aunt Het Fall Festival takes over Downtown Fountain Inn on Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The free festival includes arts and crafts vendors, food, kids’ rides, entertainment, and a car show.
For long-term residents at Greenville Gateway, events like this are worth watching for because they offer a chance to experience the community beyond Greenville’s better-known attractions.
Take your time walking Main Street, browse the vendor booths, grab lunch from one of the food vendors, check out the cars, and spend a few hours enjoying downtown Fountain Inn before heading back to your RV.
If you’ve already visited or missed this festival, or simply want another festival, Greenville County has several other fall events throughout October, including Fall for Greenville and smaller community festivals in Freetown, Staunton Bridge, Mt. Pleasant, and Sterling.
Pick Your Own Apples
Few things say fall quite like walking through an orchard on a cool October afternoon and filling a bag with apples straight from the tree.
The Hendersonville area north of Greenville is one of the Southeast’s major apple-growing destinations, and several orchards offer U-pick experiences during the fall.
For a more traditional U-pick experience, Creasman Farms in Hendersonville is worth adding to your list. Located about an hour and 15 minutes from Greenville Gateway RV Living, it’s an easy option for a fall day trip. The third-generation farm grows more than 40 varieties of heirloom and newer apples. For 2026, its U-pick orchard is scheduled to be open Sundays through October 25.
Don’t make the apples your only reason for going. Give yourself time to enjoy the drive north, stop for lunch, and bring home some apples for snacking and even a few fall recipes back at your RV.
Greenville Gateway Local Tip: Turn your apple-picking trip into a Sunday outing. Bring home a bag of apples and use a few that evening for warm apple crisp. It doesn’t take much to make your RV smell like fall.
Find the Best Fall Color
You don’t have to travel to New England to enjoy some leaf peeping.
October brings changing leaves to the Upstate too, and heading toward the Blue Ridge Mountains gives you plenty of opportunities to see the season unfold. Instead of rushing toward a single destination, make the drive itself part of the day.
Pack coffee and breakfast before leaving Greenville Gateway in the morning and head north toward the mountains. Stop when an overlook catches your attention, bring your camera, and give yourself enough time that you don’t have to watch the clock.
Caesars Head State Park is an especially worthwhile destination. If you followed our September itinerary, you may have already visited the park. October gives you a reason to return and see how much the landscape has changed as fall progresses.
Pack a picnic, spend some time at the overlooks, and make a full afternoon of it. As we noted in last month’s guide, the Mountain Bridge Wilderness trails can be challenging, so check trail information before deciding how adventurous you want your day to be.
Greenville Gateway Local Tip: Fall weekends can be busy in the mountains. An earlier start gives you more time to enjoy the drive and can make parking easier at popular destinations.
Experience a Clemson Football Saturday
Fall in the Upstate wouldn’t be complete without a little college football.
October is an especially good month to experience a Clemson game day. The Tigers have three home games at Memorial Stadium in October 2026.
October 3: Clemson vs. Miami
October 17: Clemson vs. Charleston Southern
October24: Clemson vs. Virginia Tech for Homecoming
Even if you’ve been to Clemson before, football Saturdays are always worth another visit. Get there early enough to walk campus while orange begins filling the streets. Spend some time tailgating with friends, listen as the excitement builds around Memorial Stadium, and be in your seat for Clemson’s famous entrance down The Hill.
After the game, there’s no need to rush. Grab dinner in the area, let some of the game-day traffic clear, and then make your way back toward Fountain Inn. Planning to attend a game this season? Check out our guide to RV living near Clemson for football weekends for more ideas on making the most of game day while staying at Greenville Gateway.
For someone spending the season at Greenville Gateway, that’s one of the advantages of long-term RV living near Greenville, SC: Clemson football doesn’t have to be a once-a-year trip. You can choose a game – or several – and make it part of your fall routine.
View Clemson’s 2026 football schedule
Greenville Gateway Local Tip: Clemson game-day traffic can get busy, so plan to arrive a few hours before kickoff rather than driving in right before the game. Use the extra time to walk campus, enjoy the tailgating atmosphere, and grab something to eat before heading into Memorial Stadium. After the game, consider sticking around Clemson for dinner while some of the traffic clears before making your way back to Greenville Gateway.
Take a Fall Hike at Conestee Nature Preserve
Conestee Nature Preserve, just south of Downtown Greenville, offers a quieter way to spend an October morning surrounded by forests, wetlands, and the Reedy River.
Skip the busier routes and explore the preserve’s Pink Route, which winds past lakes, wooded areas, and wetlands. Keep an eye out along the way for turtles, white-tailed deer, and even river otters, which have been spotted in this part of the preserve.
If you’d rather make wildlife watching the focus of your visit, stop at one of the preserve’s observation decks. The West Bay Observation Deck overlooks a wetland created by beavers and is a popular spot for seeing birds and other wildlife, especially earlier in the morning or around sunset.
Pack some water, bring binoculars or a camera, and give yourself time to explore. In October, the changing leaves and cooler temperatures make this an easy fall outing that doesn’t require committing your entire day.
Greenville Gateway Local Tip: Go earlier in the morning when the preserve is quieter and wildlife may be more active. Afterward, you still have most of the day free for lunch, errands, or a relaxing afternoon back at Greenville Gateway.
Fire Up the Grill on a Cool October Evening
Not every item on your Upstate South Carolina fall bucket list requires getting in the car.
After months of hot South Carolina afternoons, cooler October evenings make it much more enjoyable to spend time outside your RV.
Pick an evening when you don’t have anywhere else to be, pull out your chairs, and fire up the grill. Burgers and steaks are always easy choices, but fall is also a good time for foil-pack potatoes and vegetables, grilled sausage with peppers and onions, or even sliced apples warmed in foil with a little brown sugar and cinnamon for dessert.
Put on the Clemson game if it’s an away weekend, invite a neighbor over, or simply enjoy a quiet dinner outside.
These slower evenings are just as much a part of fall as pumpkin patches and mountain drives.
How Many Can You Check Off This Fall?
You don’t need to complete this entire list in a weekend. In fact, we’d recommend the opposite.
Pick apples one weekend. Go hiking the next. Spend a Saturday cheering on Clemson. Stop at a farmers market after work. Grill dinner outside when the forecast finally brings that first crisp evening.
That’s one of the differences between visiting the Upstate for a few days and living near Greenville, SC for an extended stay. There’s time to experience the season as it changes instead of rushing through a checklist.
